Python For Data Scientist - Python Tutorial

Best way to learn Python

Do you want to learn python the right way?

Then pay attention:

Because when I started learning Python, I’ve gone through many tutorials but found that they are more confusing than helpful.

Not only that, many online blogs and video tutorials keep creating the same crap content over and over without having expertise in that topic.

Thus today I am going to take you by the hand and reveal you how to learn Python best way step-by-step.

With this guide, in just a few minutes you will have a clear understanding of how to start your Python journey today.

Python is a very important requirement to learn machine learning, data science, or NLP.

It is the world’s fastest-growing programming language among data scientists, mathematicians, and automation engineers.

If you look at the popular job sites for data scientist job, then you will find Python as a must-have requirement.

So, without wasting time let’s understand what is Python and how it is different from other high-level languages.

What is Python

Python is a high-level, general-purpose, object-oriented programming language, which is very popular among data scientists, hackers, and even students.

It constitutes a solid base for those who wish to train in the above areas.

Python was the brainchild of a programmer from the Netherlands, Guido van Rossum.

It was introduced the first time in the early 1990s.

Before proceeding further let’s take a look at Python features.

Python Features

Easy to Learn

Python catches developers and companies for its simplicity and readability.

Most of its syntax uses English keywords frequently and hence easy to read.

Interpreted Language

Unlike Java or C++ programs, Python is an Interpreted language.

That means you don’t have to compile the Python program to convert it into the machine code.

When you run the python program, then python interpreter executes instructions directly without compiling a script into machine-language instructions.

Interactive language

Python is an interactive language, it means that the Python instructions can also be executed from the command prompt (command line) without creating a new source code file.

Free and Open Source

Among the numerous advantages, Python is also an open-source programming language.

Object-Oriented Language

Python is an object-oriented programming language.

It means that in the Python language you can create objects with properties, classes, and attributes.

In addition to that, you can also apply OOPS concepts such as inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction in your Python program.

Why Python

In the above section, we discussed Python and its features.

In this section, we will discuss why to learn Python.

Let’s write a simple hello world program to understand the difference between Java and Python program.

As you could see in the below program, you have to write a lot of boilerplate code such as the class definition, main method creation, etc. in the Java program.

However, in python just print ('Hello World') is sufficient, which is not only simple but also readable even for non-programmers.

Above was just a simple hello world program.

However, when you write a complex application for a data science project, then you will see a real difference when you compare both languages.

I am not saying Java is bad. It is great language for an Enterprise application, Mobile application development.

However, by using Python you can solve complex problems in less time and with fewer lines of code.

Moreover, the Python ecosystem has numerous libraries and framework which makes easy to proceed with artificial intelligence, data science, and web development.

In addition to that, you can easily write a python script to automate monotonous and repetitive tasks such as web automation testing, web scraping, etc.

Best way to learn Python

Python is very popular among programmers, students, and mathematicians.

Hence there are a lot of websites, online courses, and boot camps are available to teach you Python.

However, most of them are just crap.

That’s why I am writing this article.

Let’s take a look at the best way to learn Python step-by-step.

Step – 1

If you are not already familiar with Python, then I will recommend you to learn Python basics from MIT OpenCourseWare.

This course is completely FREE from MIT university.

The instructors of this course are Dr. Ana Bell, Prof. Eric Grimson, and Prof. John Guttag.

This course covers all essential Python basics concepts such as data structure, String, OOPs concepts.

Along with the video course, you can also read the lecture notes online and you can give a try to interactive assessment questions.

This course is best for beginners and provided by highly qualified instructors.

Step -2

Once you cover basic concepts, it is time to learn intermediate and advanced topics.

To learn advanced python you can take a course from Pluralsight or Edureka.

Unlike a few famous online learning marketplaces, both Pluralsight and Edureka have python courses by highly qualified instructors.

Pluralsight has many Python tutorials such as Python- Beyond the Basics, Unit Testing with Python, and Full Stack Web Development with Python.

In addition to that Pluralsight also gives you an opportunity to learn Python by developing real-world projects including Build a Job Board with Python & Flask, Building Baseball Data Visualizations with Python, etc.

You can checkout PluralSight for more details and Free Trial.

Edureka also offers many Python certifications programs Python Programming Certification Course, Python Scripting Certification Training, or their best seller Python Certification Training for Data Science course.

All Edureka’s courses are provided by subject matter experts and many employees from fortune 500 companies have subscribed and benefited from those courses.

Step – 3

Just going through online video courses is not enough.

Until you try to create a few programs by yourself you can’t get expertise into Python.

Hence you should start writing the program from Day – 1 itself.

Initially, you can write simple programs to understand basic topics such as loops, conditions, error handling, etc.

Once you get a good hold on the basics, then you can start solving advanced problems from TopCoder, CodeChef, HackerEarth, etc.

Best Python Book

Best Python Book
Best Python Book

A room without books is like a body without a soul.

Books are our best friends. The same is true with the developers.

You can refer one or two Python books to clear your doubts.

But the market is flooded with Python books.

So, why a book to refer while learning Python became a million-dollar question.

Based on my experience and research I can refer four books and you can pick any one or two books to learn python.

Python Crash Course, 2nd Edition: A Hands-On, Project-Based Introduction to Programming

Python crash course is one of the finest books available in the market to learn Python.

This book is written by Eric Matthes who is also is the author of another popular python book Python Flash Cards.

The Python crash course book covers all basic topics such as conditional statements, loops, functions, classes, etc.

In addition to that, this book also covers a few real-world projects such as Data Visualization, Web Application, etc.

Learning Python, 5th Edition

The Learning Python is another hidden gem for python learners.

This O’Reilly book is written by Mark Lutz who has written many python books including Python Pocket Reference, Programming Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming, etc.

This 1648 pages book covers all minor concepts of python from the installation to advanced topics such as Decorators, Managed Attributes, etc.

Python Cookbook, Third edition

I like the Cookbook series from O’Reilly.

The reason is obvious.

CookBook series comes with lots of useful examples that are necessary while learning as well as working for a real project.

Python Cookbook is O’Reilly’s Cookbook series book written by David Beazley and Brian K. Jones.

Fluent Python: Clear, Concise, and Effective Programming

The Fluent Python is another one of the best books available to learn the pythonic way of coding.

This book is written by Luciano Ramalho who is using Python from 1998.

Fluent Python covers many advanced concepts such as Data Structure, Object-Oriented Principles, Concurrency, and MetaProgramming.

Best Python Blog

In the above sections, we have covered online tutorials, and books.

In this tutorial, we will take a look at the top python blogs that you can refer to learn python.

Hacker Noon is a popular website among programmers, data scientists, and automation testers.

HackerNoon consists of several articles on concurrent programming, machine learning in Python.

Moreover, Hacker Noon is also the collection of many other technologies related articles on Crypto, BlockChain, Big Data, and many more.

Django Girls

Django Girls is a non-profit community that focuses on helping women to code.

However, anyone can go through and learn Python programming from this great website.

One main advantage of Django Girls is the tutorials are available in many languages such as Italiano, Español, English, Deutsch, etc.

Official Python Documentation

While writing a program, many times developers have to refer official documentation of that programming language.

That’s the reason I included python official documentation.

Python documentation consists of all python tutorials with a few examples.

In this article, I have provided the best way to learn python.

I have included online video courses, books, and websites that are managed by real subject matter experts.

If you have any other learning resources in your mind, then let me know in the comment section.

I’ll update my list.
